The Pirates of Penzance: Vocal Score
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (September, 2001)
Authors: W. S. Gilbert, Arthur Sullivan, Carl Simpson, and Ephraim Hammett Jones
Average review score:

Another G&S Winner from Dover
Once again Dover has managed to produce a Piano Vocal score which is a major improvement over the existing editions. While I can't speak for the Scholarly content, and while it doesn't claim to be a "critical edition", it does EXACTLY what a performer wants in a piano vocal score. It is clear and readable and has the words as well as the music. It is also clearly market with measure numbers at the start of each staff and has clear and well marked Major Measure markers throughout. In sum, if you are looking to perform the work, this is the edition to get.

(And if you need a Full Score, the Dover full score is also a very good deal).

Dave's Serial Killer Home Page Book Review....
Due to the complexity of the police organization in contemporary America there is a dire need for a book such as this. A former Police chief (Bain, 1939:5) backs this up by saying:

"The citizen expects police officers to have the wisdom of Solomon, the courage of David, the strength of Samson, the patience of Job, the leadership of Moses, the kindness of the Good Samaritan, the strategical training of Alexander, the faith of Daniel, the diplomacy of Lincoln, the tolerance of the Carpenter of Nazareth, and, finally, an intimate knowledge of every branch of the natural, biological, and social sciences. If he had all these, he might be a good policeman!"

And I add to that, If he had all these there would be no need for a book such as this, but sadly we are both dreamers, hence this book is a necessity for all members involved in law enforcement and or media relations....

Portrait Of War Civil War Phot
Published in Library Binding by 21st Century Books (October, 1998)
Author: Sullivan George
Average review score:

Civil War Photographers Show us the Realities of War
The prolific author, George Sullivan, is a Civil War photography expert. His latest book on the topic is specifically about six major Civil War photographers and their work. The concise book presents about 50 remarkable photographs, none of which the reader is likely to have seen elsewhere. The ugly realities of the war (including dead bodies of soldiers and a horse) are not hidden, while the haunting beauty of brave faces is captured not only by these remarkable photographers, but by the discerning eye of Sullivan, himself an accomplished photographer. The text of about 13,000 words covers about 50 of the 75 pages, exclusive an index of about 100 items. While the work is classified under juvenile literature, adults also will find the content fascinating, reminiscent of the very popular PBS television series on the war. In fact, the work could easily be the main resoruces for a film documentary on these pioneering photographers, who in reality are the historians of our country's darkest and most courageous days. Readers will also enjoy the author's book "Mathew Brady: His Life and Photographs" (Dutton, 1994).
